This 4-day hiking adventure combining the Chogoria and Sirimon routes. This trek provides a dynamic experience, from dense bamboo forests to expansive moorlands and rugged alpine terrain.
Begin your journey through the lush Chogoria forest, summit at Point Lenana, and descend through the scenic Sirimon route. This adventure promises unforgettable memories with its diverse landscapes and spectacular sunrise views from the summit.
Depart from Chogoria town for a 22 km drive through the Chogoria forest, enjoying the scenic views of the bamboo forest. Upon arrival, commence a 10 km hike heading to Chogoria Gate at 2950m, where you will set camp for the first night. The hike offers a gradual ascent, preparing you for the higher altitudes to come.
Start your day with a hike from Chogoria Park Gate through the forest. Keep an eye out for occasional wildlife sightings such as elephants, buffaloes, and impalas. After crossing the Nithi River, you will enter the moorlands and experience breathtaking views of the scenic Gorges Valley as you head to Mintos Hut at 4297m. This 17 km trek sets the stage for the summit attempt the next day.
Rise before dawn around 2 am and commence the ultimate hike to the summit of Lenana Peak at 4985m. After savoring the breathtaking sunrise views from the summit, descend to Shiptons Camp at 4200m via the Sirimon route for breakfast. Continue your trek down to Old Moses Camp at 3300m, where you will spend your last night on the mountain. This day's journey covers approximately 20 km, blending the thrill of summiting with the beauty of the descent.
After breakfast at Old Moses Camp, hike down for 9 km to Sirimon Gate at 2650m. From there, catch your travel vehicle to Nanyuki town and then transfer back to Nairobi, arriving by 17:15hrs. Reflect on the incredible journey and the stunning landscapes you've encountered.
It combines the most scenic ascent (Chogoria) with the easiest descent (Sirimon), offering diverse landscapes and a rewarding experience.
While manageable for fit beginners, previous hiking experience and proper acclimatization are recommended due to the rapid altitude gain.
You may encounter elephants, buffaloes, impalas, and various bird species, especially in the forested areas.
Temperatures at Point Lenana can drop to -10°C (14°F) or lower, so warm layers, gloves, and a good sleeping bag are essential.
