Day 01 : Moshi to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins with a scenic 50-minute drive from Moshi town to the Machame Gate. After completing registration, you’ll start your trek through the lush rainforest, navigating a winding trail that ascends a ridge. This 11-kilometer (7-mile) hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, during which you’ll marvel at towering trees, colorful birds, and possibly even Colobus monkeys. By evening, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp, where dinner and an overnight stay await.

Day 02 : Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Following a hearty breakfast, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and ascend into the moorlands. The trail takes you along a steep, rocky ridge, crossing valleys and climbing toward the Shira Plateau. Covering 5 kilometers (3 miles) over 4 to 5 hours, this day offers spectacular views of the mountain and the surrounding landscape. The day ends at Shira Camp, where you’ll enjoy dinner under a starlit sky.

Day 03 : Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Begin your trek from the Shira Plateau, heading eastward up a ridge toward Kibo Peak. As the trail leads south, you’ll reach the impressive Lava Tower, known as the “Shark’s Tooth” at 4,650 meters (15,250 feet). After taking in the views, descend to Barranco Camp, nestled in a sheltered valley below the Great Barranco Wall. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) hike takes 5 to 6 hours, offering a mix of ascent and descent that aids acclimatization.

Day 04 : Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Depart Barranco Camp and tackle the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding climb with incredible views. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley, eventually joining the Mweka Trail and leading to Barafu Camp. Covering 9 kilometers (6 miles) over 6 to 8 hours, this day completes the South Circuit, offering unique perspectives of the summit from various angles. Dinner and a briefing on the summit ascent await at Barafu Camp.

Day 05 : Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

In the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 AM, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Navigating scree and snow, the trek passes through Stella Point on the crater rim before reaching the summit. At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), you’ll celebrate your achievement with awe-inspiring views of the sunrise over Africa. After soaking in the moment, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 06 : Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

On your final day, enjoy breakfast at Mweka Camp before descending through lush forest trails to the Mweka Gate. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) hike takes 3 to 4 hours. Upon reaching the gate, collect your summit certificate and meet your transfer vehicle for the journey back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure.
