Your journey begins in Moshi town with a morning departure to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. The hike starts with a scenic trail through the rainforest, where towering eucalyptus trees and vibrant wildlife, including playful colobus monkeys, create a captivating atmosphere. Covering 8 kilometers (5 miles), the trek leads you to Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Here, you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner amidst the tranquil forest setting.
After breakfast, you’ll leave the dense rainforest and enter the open moorlands. The 12-kilometer (7.5 miles) hike is filled with breathtaking views, including glimpses of the majestic Mawenzi Peak and the distant summit of Kibo. Along the way, you’ll encounter unique alpine plants like giant lobelias and groundsels. By late afternoon, you’ll reach Horombo Hut, where you’ll unwind and savor dinner surrounded by the serene highland landscape.
The trek continues as you ascend 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) to Kibo Hut. The trail passes through the last watering point and traverses the stark and otherworldly terrain of the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The landscape transforms into a “moonscape,” with sparse vegetation and rugged terrain. Upon arriving at Kibo Hut, you’ll settle in, rest, and prepare for the summit climb.
