Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa, offers an exhilarating 5-day hiking adventure that combines the NaroMoru and Chogoria routes. This trek provides a mix of lush forests, expansive moorlands, and rugged peaks.
Starting from the NaroMoru side, the journey ascends to Point Lenana and descends through the picturesque Chogoria route, offering hikers an unforgettable experience with diverse landscapes and spectacular views.
Depart from Naro Moru town and head to Naro Moru Gate. Begin your 3.5-hour hike through the captivating montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zones before reaching the high-altitude moorland. Covering 9 km, the hike leads you to Met Station Camp at 3300m, where you will spend the night.
After breakfast, continue your 11 km ascent to Mackinders Camp, situated in Tereki Valley. The hike, which involves a 1200m ascent, takes you through diverse terrains and offers stunning views. Spend the night at Mackinders Hut, preparing for the higher altitudes to come.
Leave Mackinders Camp and hike 4 km to the Austrian Hut at 4790m. This segment of the trek offers spectacular views of the main peaks and helps with acclimatization. Spend the night at Austrian Hut, setting the stage for the summit attempt.
Start your ascent at around 5 am for a 1-hour hike to Point Lenana, arriving in time to witness a stunning sunrise from the summit. After taking in the breathtaking views, descend to Mintos Hut at 4297m for breakfast. Continue your descent, covering 22 km, to Chogoria Gate. This descent offers breathtaking scenery from the Gorges Valley. Set up camp near Chogoria Gate for the night.
On the final day, walk for 10 km through the Chogoria forest to catch your travel vehicle to Chogoria town. From there, transfer back to Nairobi, arriving early in the evening, reflecting on the incredible journey and the diverse landscapes you’ve encountered.
