Mount Kenya, standing tall at 5,199 meters, presents a thrilling 5-day hiking experience via the Chogoria and Sirimon routes. This trek offers a mix of lush forests, breathtaking moorlands, and rugged alpine landscapes.
Beginning with the picturesque Chogoria forest, the journey ascends to stunning viewpoints and culminates in a spectacular sunrise at Point Lenana. The descent through the Sirimon route provides a contrasting yet equally beautiful experience.
Depart from Chogoria town for a 22 km drive through the Chogoria forest, enjoying the scenic views of the bamboo forest. After the drive, commence a 10 km hike heading to Chogoria Gate at 2950m, where you will set camp for the first night. The initial hike offers a gradual ascent, ideal for acclimatizing to the altitude.
Start the day with breakfast before embarking on an 8 km hike from Chogoria Gate to Lake Ellis at around 3400m. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to hike up Mugi Hill (3541m) and enjoy the scenic views of Ithanguni and the Giant's Billiards Table. Settle at the lakeside campsite for the second night, surrounded by stunning natural beauty.
Depart Lake Ellis campsite and head towards Mintos Hut at 4297m. This 10 km hike takes you through the spectacular Gorges Valley, providing breathtaking views and diverse landscapes. Spend the night at Mintos Hut, preparing for the summit attempt the next day.
Wake up in the early hours, around 2:30 am, to begin the ascent to Point Lenana at 4985m. Arrive at the summit by sunrise for an unforgettable view. After soaking in the breathtaking sights, descend to Shiptons Camp at 4200m for breakfast. Continue descending to Old Moses Camp at 3300m, where you will spend the night. This day's journey covers approximately 20 km, blending the thrill of summiting with the descent's scenic beauty.
After breakfast at Old Moses Camp, descend for about three hours, covering 9 km, to Sirimon Gate at 2650m. From there, catch your travel vehicle to Nanyuki town and transfer back to Nairobi, arriving around 16:00hrs. Reflect on the incredible journey and the diverse landscapes you’ve encountered.
