Mount Kenya, towering at 5,199 meters, offers an exciting 4-day hike that combines through the Sirimon-Chogoria route. This journey provides hikers with the opportunity to experience various landscapes, from dense forests to scenic valleys and rugged peaks.
The trek begins on the Sirimon route, known for its gradual ascent and beautiful views, and descends through the picturesque Chogoria route. This adventure promises unforgettable moments, culminating in a stunning sunrise at Point Lenana.
Depart from Nanyuki town and travel to Sirimon Gate at 2650m. Begin your hike, following the track as it winds uphill through the forest, transitioning into heathland after about three hours. Approximately three and a half hours from the gate, the track veers right to Judmier Camp at 3300m, where you will spend the night.
After breakfast, continue your ascent, turning left at the junction after an hour of hiking from Old Moses Camp. The trail crosses Ontulili River and contours through the Moorland, crossing Likii North. Continue uphill to Mackinder's Valley, where you can enjoy scenic views up the valley towards the main peaks. This 17 km trek takes about six to seven hours. Overnight at Shipton Camp.
Depart Shipton Camp at 3 am for a 3.5-hour trek towards lower Hall Tarns, arriving at Point Lenana (4985m) around 6:30 am to witness a breathtaking sunrise. After enjoying the view, descend for two hours to Mintos Hut for breakfast. Continue your descent, covering 20 km over 4-5 hours, to reach Mount Meru Bandas at 2950m. This day entails a total hike of approximately 32 km over 11-12 hours.
On the final day, descend for about two hours, covering 10 km, to reach a forest clearance where you will meet your travel vehicle for the journey back to Chogoria town.
It offers a gentle ascent on Sirimon and a scenic descent via Chogoria, featuring dramatic landscapes, waterfalls, and valleys.
A good level of fitness is required as the trek covers long distances, including a challenging 32 km day, but it’s manageable with proper pacing.
The Chogoria route is scenic but longer, requiring good endurance, though the gradual descent makes it easier on the knees compared to steep trails.
