The route provides excellent acclimatization opportunities, making it one of the most successful paths for summit attempts. Beginning at the Londorossi Gate, this trail ensures a less crowded experience while showcasing Mount Kilimanjaro’s unparalleled beauty.
Your adventure begins with a scenic 3-hour drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, where you'll complete registration. From the gate, embark on a 6-kilometer (4-mile) trek through a lush forest trail that leads to the Lemosho Glades. The hike will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, offering opportunities to spot wildlife like monkeys and birds. You’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, known for its towering trees, where you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, begin your ascent into the moorland zone. The 16-kilometer (10-mile) trail crosses several streams, leading you toward Shira Ridge and then to Shira 2 Camp, which sits at an elevation of about 3,850 meters (12,600 feet). The hike takes 7 to 8 hours and offers spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro as you ascend through varied landscapes. Dinner and rest await at Shira 2 Camp.
Start the day with a trek toward the Lava Tower, also known as the "Shark's Tooth," at an elevation of 4,650 meters (15,250 feet). This 8-kilometer (5-mile) hike will take approximately 5 to 6 hours, offering magnificent views of the surrounding terrain. After reaching the Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley and camp at Barranco Camp, located below the Great Barranco Wall. This trek is designed to help with acclimatization by combining both ascent and descent.
After breakfast, tackle the iconic Barranco Wall, a steep but rewarding climb that offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape. Once at the top, descend into the Karanga Valley and proceed to Karanga Camp, located at 4,000 meters (13,100 feet). This 5-kilometer (3-mile) trek will take about 3 to 4 hours, with spectacular views of the summit. Enjoy a relaxing dinner and prepare for the next day’s journey.
Today’s trek takes you on a 4-kilometer (2-mile) hike to Barafu Camp, which takes about 3 to 4 hours. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of the summit from multiple angles as you complete the South Circuit. At Barafu Camp, you’ll have the opportunity to rest and prepare for the final push toward the summit. Dinner and a briefing on the summit ascent will be provided.
The final ascent begins in the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 AM. After a challenging trek through scree and snow, you’ll pass through Stella Point on the crater rim and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Celebrate your accomplishment as you watch the African sunrise from the summit. Afterward, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue your descent to Mweka Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
On your final day, enjoy breakfast at Mweka Camp before descending through lush forest trails to the Mweka Gate. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) hike will take 3 to 4 hours, offering a final opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery. Upon reaching the gate, collect your summit certificate and meet your transfer vehicle for the journey back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the conclusion of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
